
Ecology Grant of $702,913 Benefits Seattle Solid Waste Utility Programs
Ecology has awarded a $702,913 grant to the Seattle Solid Waste Utility for programs to help prevent waste and increase recycling. The agency will use the grant to support the Business and Industry Recycling Venture, a joint project with the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce designed to increase recycling in the commercial sector. The grant will also help fund the city's backyard composting program and cover some of the costs of developing an environmental impact statement for the city's solid waste management plan.

Seattle-King County Agencies Receive $1,547,258 in Ecology Waste Grants
Ecology has awarded grants totaling $1,547,258 to the Seattle-King County Department of Health and the Seattle-King County Public Health Department for waste management projects. The health department will use an $1,470,258 grant to collect and dispose of household hazardous waste and provide technical assistance to businesses that generate small quantities of hazardous waste. The public health department will use a $77,000 grant to enforce solid waste laws, including inspecting and permitting facilities, and responding to complaints about illegal disposal.

Ecology Awarded $25,000 to Everett to Control Aquatic Weeds
Ecology awarded an Aquatic Weeds Management Fund grant of $25,000 to Everett to continue controlling milfoil in Silver Lake. Aquatic weeds are harmful to aquatic life and threaten the safety of boaters, swimmers and anglers. The grant will be used to partially fund the fourth year of the five-year project. Diver hand pulling and diver-operated dredges will be used to remove milfoil roots and stems. If necessary, bottom barriers will be cleaned and repositioned to stop light for plant growth.
