NATA (National Air Toxics Assessment) Information

The National Air Toxics Assessment, or NATA, evaluated the effects of pollutants known or suspected of causing cancer or other serious health problems, such as birth defects. The purpose of this national-scale assessment is to report EPA’s estimates of the nationwide health risks caused by air toxics. This latest assessment estimated cancer and/or non-cancer health effects for 133 air toxics.

Washington State has a list of toxic air pollutants that are of greatest concern in our state.  These substances are of the most concern because they:

1) May cause harm from cancer based on a 1-in-a-million risk; or

2) May cause harm other than cancer (have a potential for adverse health effects).
