Toxics Reduction Advisory Committee (TRAC)
What is the role of Toxics Reduction Advisory Committee?
In 2008 the Washington State Legislature included a "proviso"
in its supplemental budget calling for
formation of a stakeholder advisory committee to submit a
report on the following tasks:
- Review and develop recommendations to help businesses
achieve a goal of reducing use of toxic substances by
50 percent;
- Review and make recommendations to improve the effectiveness
and delivery of technical assistance in pollution prevention
planning;
- Develop recommendations for strategies to encourage moving
away from "end-of-pipe" pollution reduction approaches to
increase hazardous waste prevention throughout the state; and
- Review and make recommendations on revising the hazardous
waste planning fee under RCW 70.95E.030, including opportunities
to provide incentives that reward businesses for toxic use
reduction successes in meeting a 50 percent toxics use
reduction goal.
The committee is to report its findings and recommendations to
the fiscal and policy committees of the Senate and House of
Representatives by November 1, 2008.
Public Involvement
Ecology has developed several ways to inform the public about
this rule-making process:
- Web Site. Ecology regularly updates this web page with
information on committee activities, including how to comment.
- Email Notices. Ecology maintains the Toxics
Reduction Advisory Committee electronic mailing list to email
information and notices to persons interested in the activities
related to the Toxics Reduction Advisory Committee. Ecology
encourages interested persons, including businesses, interest
group representatives, government representatives and the public
to send a request to join the mailing list.
- Advisory Group Meetings. Ecology has convened an advisory
group composed of business associations, manufacturers,
toxicologists and toxics use reduction advocates to make
recommendations that make sense for Washington. These meetings
are open to the public at times specified in the Public Events
Calendar. Please check the advisory group web page for more
information about these meetings.
